75th Anniversary Commemoration of the WWII Battle Of Peleliu (2)

Saturday, November 2, 2019 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
This event does not repeat

On November 1-2, living historians from all over the country and Japan will be at Fort Morgan to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Peleliu, which took place in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII.

From September to November of 1944, US Marines of the 1st Marine Division, Soldiers of the Army’s 81st Infantry Division, along with Navy Seabees fought to take the small island of Peleliu, in the Palau Islands, from the Japanese. Part of Admiral Nimitz Island Hopping Campaign across the Pacific, Peleliu was one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific War.

On Friday and Saturday, November 1 and 2, over a hundred volunteers will represent WWII Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, and Imperial Japanese Army Soldiers, two of which are flying in from Japan, at Fort Morgan.

Friday will consist of training and firing demonstrations, to include a WWII Flamethrower, an M3 37MM Anti-tank gun from the National WWII Museum, and a variety of US and Japanese small arms. Saturday morning will be more of the same. Additionally, weather permitting, a flight of WWII Grasshopper aircraft like those that flew spotting missions over Peleliu will land at Fort Morgan after 8am.

At 1:30pm Saturday the living historians will conduct a tactical demonstration of the effort to take the airfield at Peleliu. Fighting down the airstrip, Marines, and soldiers will simulate the Peleliu airfield assault, while Japanese reenactors demonstrate Japanese defensive tactics. Weather permitting air support for the Marines is expected to arrive as well.
